Charlotte Still Reigns, Milwaukee on the Rise
For the second straight year, Charlotte, N.C., was the metro area with the highest average annual compensation for physicians, offering $402,273. These numbers reflect all specialties averaged together.
The top 10 metro areas in which physicians had the highest average annual salary in 2017 are:
- Charlotte, N.C. ($402,273)
- Milwaukee ($398,431)
- Jacksonville, Fla. ($379,820)
- Indianapolis ($378,011)
- San Jose, Calif. ($376,585)

4 of 5 of the metro areas are in SWPRE's strategic plan to build around specific medical schools and academic medical centers. The only exception is San Jose. We have already designated UCSF, about 50 miles from San Jose, and Stanford, about 14 miles from San Jose, as Preferred Nonprofits.
